New Cover: Hootie & The Blowfish – Goodbye

My 2nd album from Cygnus will soon be completed, and I thought this tune was very appropriate in both title and content for the 10th and closing track.

It’s a cover of one of my favorite Hootie songs, from what I consider their finest work, “Cracked Rear View”.

I turned this one out pretty quickly, so it’s fairly raw and not remotely close in quality to others I’ve produced, but hopefully still not overly offensive to the ear.

Of course, I’m aware the original was played nearly 100% on piano. I transcribed it for guitar, and as usual threw in a few other personal touches: Mandolin, strings and various other things to hopefully create a nice, full-sounding arrangement, yet not overly cluttered up. Still, save the strings it was played using only acoustic instruments.

As I always say, if you’re going to cover a song, why would you want to make it identical to the original? You may as well throw in the CD and listen to that instead.

Speaking of the new album, this time around it will be released in downloadable format only, exclusively on this blog. Of course like everything else here, it’ll be absolutely free.

Look for an availability announcement soon…

Last but certainly not least, out of all the song dedications I’ve ever made, I finally realized that I’d neglected the single most important person in the world to me.

My Gracie, this one’s for you, dearest love…

“I don’t want to live to see the day we say goodbye”
says it all, better than I ever could.

Words and music by Hootie & The Blowfish (D. Felber/D. Rucker/M. Bryan/J. Sonefeld)

Tomorrow used to be a day away
Now love is gone and you're into someone far away
I never thought the day would come
When I would see his hand, not mine
Holding on to yours because I could not find the time

And now I can’t deny, nothing lasts forever
But I don't want to leave and see the teardrops in your eyes
I don't want to live to see the day we say, “Goodbye”

Now there comes another part of life I call “alone”
Sitting at a bar with Chris that I can't leave
‘Cause my house ain't no home, no
I just want to touch you girl
I want to feel you close to me
Without your love, I would give up now and walk away so easily

So maybe while we're young
We'll figure out together
That even with the pain, there’s a remedy and we'll be alright
I don't want to live to see the day we say, “Goodbye”

When I first met you I couldn't love anyone
Oh, but you stole my dreams and you made me see
That I can walk into the sun and I can still be me

And now I can't deny, nothing lasts forever
But I don't want to leave and see the teardrops in your eyes

So baby, while we're young
Let's figure out together
That even with the pain, there’s a remedy and we'll be alright
I don't want to live to see the day we say, “Goodbye”
We say, “Goodbye”
Oh, goodbye
Goodbye.
